The Ellensburg School District is hosting a free Youth Mental Health First Aid class presented by Comprehensive Healthcare on April 1-2 in English and April 25-26 in Spanish. This is an eight-hour class (four hours each day, 8am – 12pm) designed to teach members of the public who work with youth how to respond to a youth experiencing a mental health crisis and offer support to a youth who appears to be in distress.
The goal is to preserve life when a person may be a danger to self/others, and prevent the problem from becoming more serious. This class offers a blueprint for providing comfort, reducing distress and promoting recovery. It includes an overview of the signs and symptoms of various mental health disorders including anxiety, depression, substance abuse, intentional self-injury, trauma, and psychosis.
This class is for anybody, 18 year or older, who regularly interacts with youth such as:
Youth Mental Health First Aid is specific to adolescents and includes lots of interaction and practice of intervention techniques.
